Expectations influence cancer treatment side effects

Do you ever find it hard to separate your expectations of an up-coming event from the reality of that event? This often happens when we are facing the unknown, embarking on something we’ve never experienced before, especially when it’s an unwanted experience that we are forced into. It turns out those fearful expectations can play an important role in determining our experiences with certain cancer treatments. In a recent study of the effects of patient expectations on experienced side effects of hormone therapy, researchers found that women expecting to suffer worse and more side effects actually experienced nearly twice as many side effects as their counterparts who had either no particular expectations or had positive expectations.
