Knitted Knockers

A Knitted Knocker (KK) is a soft, hand-knitted breast prosthetic. Knitted Knockers provide a temporary solution while healing after a mastectomy, lumpectomy or during reconstruction. They are light weight, adjustable and machine washable. They do not require a special bra. KK’s are very popular in Florida because they are cool, comfortable and ideal for swimming (since they won’t float away). A regular breast prosthetic is made to simulate the natural weight of breast tissue and may be more appropriate long-term for a woman who has had a single mastectomy.

During the time that Barbara had only one breast, she was very self-conscious in public. The KK gave her self-confidence and Barbara has since made it her mission to share this handmade gift with others. Her organization uses volunteer knitters from around the world to fill requests for the free, knitted breast prosthetic.

Instructions and tips, as well as information on local groups, can be found at Patterns are available for cup sizes from A to DD. Over 20,000 KK’s have been distributed nationally. The need is huge, there are 1.2 million women living in the U.S. right now who have had a mastectomy without breast reconstruction.

In April, the Sarasota Herald Tribune published an article about two local women, Tova Cravens and Joan Carlson, who make and distribute Knitted Knockers. They were overwhelmed by hundreds of responses from knitters who wanted to join the cause. Our local knitters wanted a place where they could knit as a group but that would also offer privacy for women to try them out and select the correct size. The Sarasota ladies soon connected with Bambi Furtado, Director of Cancer Support and Wellness Programs of Jewish Family and Children’s Services (JFCS). Knitted Knockers fit right in with our Stitch & Chat group. On the fourth Friday of each month, you will find knitters, novices and women looking for Knitted Knockers at the South Tuttle JFCS campus.
