Radiation for Breast Cancer - More is Not Better

According to a newly reported study that was conducted over two decades, partial breast irradiation for 1 week following a lumpectomy was just as effective as 6 weeks of whole breast radiation with respect to cancer recurrence and cosmetic outcomes. The new treatment, known as accelerated partial breast irradiation, has the added benefit of being more targeted, thereby reducing exposure to vital organs such as the lung and heart.
